Are there any mountains in Czechia? Yes there are!

Acting as a natural defense line, Czechia is almost on all sides surrounded by mountains. All along the border, with the exception of the southeast of the country, mountains dominate the landscape and offer splendid views on Czechia and also on the neighboring Germany, Austria, Poland and Slovakia.

Czechia counts 15 mountain ranges where the peaks reach a minimum of a thousand meters. The highest peaks can be found on the northside of the country, mainly in the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše) and in the Jeseníky range.

What makes the picturesque Czech mountains unique is that you can roam through them without fear of getting lost. The countless trails are all assigned their own colour, mostly blue, red, yellow and green. The dense network is proudly taken care of by the Czech Hiking Club and hiking maps with the same color markings exist for nearly every mountainous region.

No special precautions are needed when you hike the mountains. Good walking shoes, some spare nothing and a sufficient water and food supply will do the trick. In general you won’t come across any dangerous wild animals. The very rare exception are the deep forests of the Beskydy Mountains, where an occasional bear may stray. However, the chance of meeting a bear is almost nonexistent.
