CAVES

A subterranean world

Under the surface of the heart of Europe there lies an interwoven system of corridors forming tunnels and beautiful caves. The caves in Czechia count about a dozen so-called karst areas.

The majority is situated in the Moravian part of the country, with the Moravian karst being the largest cave area. In total over 2.000 caves are known in Czechia, of which 14 are open to the public.

The Punkevní caves in the Moravian karst have the largest annual attendance of all the accessible caves. There, you will also find the largest accessible underground space. The Main Dome in the Kateřinská Cave has dimensions of 95×44×20 m.

The Na Špičáku cave is the oldest one. Its interior is believed to be about 380 million years old. It was mentioned for the first time in written documents in 1430 and in this way it is also the oldest documented cave in central Europe.

All the caves in Czechia are very well accessible. Just remember to take some warm clothes to wear and put on some good hiking shoes.

Into the abyss

Punkevní (or Punkva) caves are the most famous and the most visited caves in Czechia with almost 200.000 visitors a year.

Their main attraction is the view from the 138 meters deep Macocha abyss. From there, you explore the underground Punkva river by boat. It is the only cave in Czechia that offers the opportunity to see the wonderful combination of water and rock formations.

The Macocha abyss can also be seen from above from two observation bridges to which visitors are transported by a cable car from the entrance to the caves.

Please note that the tour of the Punkevní caves is very popular and that booking in advance is a must.

Did you know?

The Sloupsko-šošůvské caves were the first in the world in 1881 to be illuminated by electricity.

Not far from the Zbrašov Aragonite caves you will find the deepest abyss in Czechia. The Hranická abyss is the deepest known underwater cave in the world. In August 2020, a scientific exploration of the cave revealed that it is approximately 1 kilometer deep.

The Mladečské cave is the largest and oldest settlement of the Cromagnon man in Central Europe. The cave became a world-famous archeological site when a number of skeletons of prehistoric people and their creations were discovered inside.
