BEER & WINE

A rich beer and wine culture

With the highest beer consumption per capita in the world, Czechia can truly claim the title of ‘homeland of beer’. History records show that there was already brewing taking place in Břevnov Monastery in 993. The city of Brno had the right to brew beer from the 12th century while Plzeň and České Budějovice had breweries as early as the 13th century.

The most common Czech beers are pale lagers of pilsner type, with its characteristic transparent golden colour, high foaminess and lighter flavour. Some fine examples are Pilsner Urquell (the world’s first pilsner), Gambrinus, Kozel, Radegast and Staropramen.

Czech wine is produced mainly in southern Moravia. The region accounts for almost 96% of Czechia’s vineyards, which is why Czech wine is more often referred to as Moravian wine. Production centers on local grape varieties, but there has been an increase in the production of established international strains such as Cabernet Sauvignon.

Recent survey shows that the popularity of wines is increasing rapidly in Czechia.

In vino veritas!

Wine naturally belongs to South Moravia. If you come to the region and have an interest in wine, you should definitely visit the local wine cellars and taste some Moravian wine. In our program ‘Prague to nature’ you enjoy a degustation of delicious Moravian wines in a traditional wine cellar. But there are more ‘must-see’ wine stops. How about the Wine Salon of the Czech Republic, which is a public degustation exposition of hundreds of the best wines in the historical cellars of the UNESCO listed Valtice Chateau. The historical Plže wine cellars in Petrov are an amazing sight to see. They are located in small white houses with a sky blue base walls and colourful vine ornamentation along the sides. With a bit of imagination you could see Tolkien hobbits live here. The Šobes Vineyards are among the oldest vineyards in Czechia, and ranks among the ten best vineyard locations in Europe. Its ideal conditions are ensured by a south-facing slope and high quality soil in the very heart of Podyjí National Park where it is located right on the side of a rocky promontory on a bend of the River Dyje.
