ANIMAL PARKS

A long tradition

Zoos and the protection of endangered animal species have a long tradition in Czechia. The oldest zoo in the Czech Republic was founded back in 1904 in Liberec and opened for visitors in 1919. Currently, there are 29 zoos in the Czech Republic, 16 of which are members of either the European or World Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

The zoo in Liberec is the most popular zoo in the country, not in the least because of its famous white Bengal tiger breeding program. Every year 340.000 people come to the zoo to have a look at this unique species.

The Zoological Garden of Pilsen (founded in 1926) is famous for breeding snow owls and giant ocelots

Zlín zoo is a unique place where you can see animals from all continents in a natural BioPark with free range. The animals here live in a perfect imitation of their original habitat. Zlín zoo is the only zoo in continental Europe where you can see the New Guinea singing dog. This old dog line is among the rarest animal species in the world, only discovered by scientists in the 1950’s.

The biggest zoo you will find in Prague. The Troja zoo is dedicated to the conservation of endangered species, like for example the Przewalski horse. A safari in Czechia?

Yes, you can! In Dvůr Králové you can make a safari among one of the largest kennels of African animals in Europe, which is also one of the best rhinoceros breeders in the world. You can even stay here in a campsite or a Safari Hotel, which is located right in the zoo area, or in the treetops directly overlooking the antelopes and zebras. Very popular are the African off-road safari, the evening safari or the lion safari.

The zoo in Olomouc also created a safari in recent years. In 2013, the first part, Eurasia, was opened, with the Caucasian ibex, Sika deer and East Siberian deer and the European bison and elk. In 2015 followed the Africa Safari with South African rhinos and giraffes. In 2020, the Kalahari part was opened, which is home to meerkats, damans, rakes and honeyeaters. The safari ends at the Hudson White Wolves, whose homeland is the Hudson Bay Area in eastern Canada.
