BEER & WINE
A rich beer and wine culture
With the highest beer consumption per capita in the world, Czechia can truly claim the title of ‘homeland of beer’. History records show that there was already brewing taking place in Břevnov Monastery in 993. The city of Brno had the right to brew beer from the 12th century while Plzeň and České Budějovice had breweries as early as the 13th century.
The most common Czech beers are pale lagers of pilsner type, with its characteristic transparent golden colour, high foaminess and lighter flavour. Some fine examples are Pilsner Urquell (the world’s first pilsner), Gambrinus, Kozel, Radegast and Staropramen.
Czech wine is produced mainly in southern Moravia. The region accounts for almost 96% of Czechia’s vineyards, which is why Czech wine is more often referred to as Moravian wine. Production centers on local grape varieties, but there has been an increase in the production of established international strains such as Cabernet Sauvignon.
Recent survey shows that the popularity of wines is increasing rapidly in Czechia.
