CYCLING

Czechia on two wheels

Czech people are extremely enthusiastic cyclers. Czechia counts more than 44.000 km of cycling paths. 5300 kilometers of those paths are long-distance cycling trails, connecting the most beautiful places in the country.

Four of them are part of the EuroVelo long-distance European cycling trails. Others categorize under the Czech Trails, a national brand focusing on bicycle touring and other active forms of tourism (like in-line skating, hiking and water sports).

Apart from the long-distance trails, you can also find 23 bike parks and 12 single tracks all over Czechia, mainly in the more mountainous regions.

Prepare yourself for rides through the scenic countryside along the wine trails of South Moravia, through the deep forests of Šumava or along the lush banks of the Labe (Elbe) river, and enjoy nature at its fullest.

Take a ride and have a glass!

South Moravia is crisscrossed by 1.200km of marked trails known as the Moravian Wine Routes. The routes run through the unspoiled countryside of South Moravia, which consists for the most part of gently rolling hills, with detours to viewing points. It travels past rows of wine cellars and links the best known wine producing villages. You’ll normally be pedaling along quiet back roads or country tracks across fields and through forests, meaning you can hit the trail on both a mountain and road bike.

There’s a total of 11 wine routes, all different in length. With its 165 km, the Znojemská route is the longest of them all. Along the way you’ll have the chance to savor a cocktail of aromatic wines blended with some unique cultural heritage. Be sure to take a tour of historical Znojmo, take a seat in the Šatovský painted cellar and visit the impressive Gothic ruins of the monastery in Dolní Kounice.

Be warned though, you are considered a driver even when riding a bicycle. That means that the Czech zero tolerance for alcohol in the blood applies for cyclists as well. So, when planning a trip on the bicycle, or in the middle of a trip, as a cyclist you cannot drink alcohol.

Did you know?

The Iron Curtain Trail (EuroVelo 13) is the longest EuroVelo trail that runs through the whole continent along the former border dividing Europe into two military and political blocs. The nature in this formerly inaccessible and strictly guarded territory developed without any human intervention.

The Elbe Cycle Route follows the course of one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. Along the way, the medieval towns and flat plains interweaving with the cliffs and slopes of the highest Czech mountains make the scenery one never to forget.

The Cyclists Welcome certification for accommodation and catering facilities, or tourist destinations, guarantees a good quality of services. The “smiling bike” logo also guarantees safe bicycle storage, equipment for bicycle repairs and cleaning, clothes washing and drying, and other useful services.

Most long-distance cycling trails in the Czech Republic are well-connected to the railways. Bicycles can be transported as accompanied luggage on Czech Railways trains (marked with the bicycle symbol), or in the storage carriage (marked with the suitcase symbol). The price of the service depends on the distance travelled.
